Today I went for my last round of tests to become medically certified to give my mom one of my kidneys. Apparently all was good. :) Believe it or not...when my EKG report was given to me there was a message printed on it that kind of scared me...so I asked the nurse what it meant...she says that is just because you have a low heart rate...and I said..that is good though...right? and she said...that just means you are very fit. :) My HR was 61 when she took my BP earlier and my BP was 110/70....she said it was excellent! Yaay!
I honestly did not realize that this would be happening...I mean I have been focusing on becoming healthier for the past two years...I am thinking that this is for my longevity and being able to do more with my kids, etc....I never once thought about actually being a donor! :) This is actually a great blessing and I am very honored to be doing this for my mom.
We are officially scheduled to complete the surgery on July 13th....I should be out of the hospital within 3 days and my incision will be a few inches right below my ribcage on my side. Not sure which side, but the surgeon said that they prefer the right side if the kidneys are equally healthy. And did you know that some people have more than one artery connected to their kidney? HUH!? He said that if that was the case then they would not do the surgery...I suppose I am not an odd ball because we are good to go! :)
Well it is late and I should go to bed...I am kind of wound up because of all the stuff I learned today about being a donor...I will try to share more about this subject later because I truly believe that if more people knew more about donating organs then fewer people would need to be on dialysis and fewer lives would be lost due to kidney/liver failures.
Hi Cindy,
ReplyDeleteI admire you for what you`re doing! Yes, fitness lowes the HR. A week ago I had to call 911 for my man and when the paramedics were checking his HR it was about 60 wich they said is normal. On the way to the hospital one of the guys said that athletes (my man is not an athlete) can have HR as low as 40bpm. So don`t be scared if on the long run you HR goes even lower. With BB you`re doomed to be fit:)
When I was telling you my mom`s story, I fergot to tell you, that fasting boosts the emmune system and makes easier the recovery after surgery. My mom had to have 2/3 of her stomach removed because of the cancer and she was sent home after a week, while other patients with the same operation were still in the hospital. So you did all the right things before the operation!!

Fasting is one thing that Mark Sisson (primal blueprint author) really advocates! :) I think I will do some fasting before our slated surgery date. :)
ReplyDeleteI was told that I can expect to loose 5-10 lbs after the surgery because I won't have much of an appetite. We shall see. :)
You're a good daughter Cindy. I'm sure your mother would be very proud of you. Hope she recuperate faster after the operation.
